Available for holidays, mini-breaks and B&B, these two 17th century cottages have recently been refurbished in the picturesque Cinque port of Sandwich, Kent, South East England.
Imagine a thriving town and port that grew to a substantial size (for the middle ages !), with all the wooden- beamed houses, three parish churches and over fifty pubs. In fact it grew to such an extent that an Earl took on the title and then invented a bread snack known throughout the world and named after the town.
Up to the middle of the 17th Century Sandwich was one of the busiest ports in England, with a population of seafarers and associated trades and of similar size to the present day. Unfortunately for the people of Sandwich at that time (and fortunately for visitors today !) the mouth of the River Stour and the Haven, the anchorage for the large ships, silted up and the vast wealth and fortune brought in by the shipping trade dried up with the river. Consequently Sandwich retains many of the buildings of its wealthier past and has remained in a time warp since.
However, Sandwich has also thrived in a previous time; the Romans established Sandwich, and built the fort at Rutupiae (Richborough) on the opposite bank of the Stour, the remains of the fort still exist, and are a popular site for visitors. Now Sandwich is a quiet little town retaining its connection to the sea via the Stour and the Quay and there is a multitude of fascinating shops, pubs, restaurants and a small market on Thursday mornings.
Both cottages have recently been extensively refurbished, with great lengths taken to ensure they retain their original character, with timber and flagstone floors and original wooden beams. They are situated in the centre of the ancient town, which has retained the charm from its heyday in the Tudor period. The town is less the 1 and a half hours from central London, 20 minutes from the cathedral city of Canterbury, 20 minutes from the channel ports (for easy day trips to France), and only five minutes from three world renown golf clubs (Royal St. George's, Prince's, and Royal Cinque Port's).
Both cottages are fitted with cash meters for electricity. Cots can be provided. There is a secure, sound proof door between the two cottages, which can be opened if both cottages are let to the same party. The cottages have small courtyard gardens, but there are plenty of open spaces and a pretty walk around the town walls and moat ideal for dog walking fishing, etc. As we live next door to the cottages, we would hope that you would ask for any special needs to be accommodated.
