If SET WRITE_INTERMEDIATES = 1, how often are the intermediates written out? Is there some variable that can be set to control the level of intermediate output, i.e. every 1000 iterations?

One for each model you created, specified by the STARTING_MODEL and ENDING_MODEL

Use SWITCH_TRACE command and TRACE_OUTPUT variable to do that, please.
