The executable is not recognized as such on your system. If you do
size mod_r10000-IRIX6.2
do you get
piano:~/tmp> file mod_r10000-IRIX6.2

Did you ftp the file in the binary format?
Are you sure you have an R10000 system (use hinv to find out). The
executable in the archive was compiled on Solid Impact Indigo^2
with R10000 processor running IRIX 6.2 and it works fine here.
If all this fails, try to get mod_iris4d (compiled for R4400 under
IRIX 5.3).
