I don't know what prompted you to run that. ;) Look at the install instructions. To run a script "model.py" just type 
python model.py
or if Python isn't installed on your system, or you have not set Modeller up to work with it, you can fall back to 
mod9.9 model.py
You shouldn't run the mod9.9_i386-intel8 binary directly, since (as you've seen) it needs certain environment variables set first, which python or mod9.9 take care of.
