In addition to what Björn mentioned I would check what's in the .cshrc file (or .bashrc, depending on your shell), since limit should already be set there to unlimited.

Are you sure you set the stack size to unlimited?
ulimit -S unlimited (under bash) limit stacksize unlimited (tcsh)
